  • American theologian Leonard Sweet believes the most important indicators of postmodernism are best summarized with the acronym EPIC: Experiential, Participatory, Image-driven, Connected. In his view, if the Church of postmodern “EPIC-Times” wants to reach people with the Gospel, it must become an EPICChurch. Inspired by Sweet’s approach and after discovering the four EPIC-indicators in the celebration of Communion, the author seeks to analyse whether the EPIC-approach can be applied to Communion and to what extent developing a concept of EPIC Communion (i.e. a celebration of Communion according to the EPIC indicators, which is committed to a postmodern context as well as remaining true to the biblical account) can be directive for the Communion practice in the future. From a biblical and theological perspective, the author clarifies which contents and forms are counted as normative and independent of time and context for a contextual Communion service in the postmodern era. The missionary aspect of Communion unfolds in that the Gospel is not only preached verbally but also experienced through the sacramental act. It therefore must be clarified whether Communion, in the sense of EPIC Communion, can be used as an evangelistic opportunity or if non-Christians should be excluded from partaking in Communion. In this context, the author opts for the practice of an “open Communion”. EPIC Communion is neither a comprehensive theology nor a fully formulated liturgy of Communion; rather, the author proposes criteria to develop specific forms of Communion services for a postmodern context, and gives illustrations for an according practice. It combines Communion and the postmodern context in a balanced and fitting way. It demonstrates how Communion can be celebrated both in a contemporary manner and true to the institution of Holy Communion through Jesus so that its missionary impact can fully unfold.
